Journal #5 ~ Social Networking

http://www.classroom20.com/forum/topic/listForTag?tag=socialnetworking

Social networking is a way to build a community of people on the internet who have a similar interest. The social network community can provide useful information as well as a support system. These teachers were having trouble getting their colleagues to join and participate. One man talked about how he had to put up useful tools that others could only get through joining. Even though he got them to join, many of them do not participate in discussions. There needs to be topics that people can relate to in order to further a discussion. The people who are not really comfortable with the site will most likely not start a conversation, but would probably respond to one already started. In another discussion, a teacher talks about how he wants to create a Wiki to tie in with his science class. His vision is to have his Wiki be in collaboration with others all over the world. Other teachers sounded very interested and enthusiastic about joining in on it. The Wiki would include lessons, videos, pictures, and comments/suggestions from those involved. The major problem I see with this is making sure that it incorporates all the curricula of the schools involved. Then there was a discussion on the content that is blocked by their school districts. Web 2.0 is blocked for some and the teachers were complaining because it can be a useful tool. Others were saying that all sites that include blogging, social networking, and file sharing are blocked. I could see how these sites could be abused and not used in a educational way during school hours. I liked the way one district had the teachers apply to use the blogging site and if it was acceptable, they would be approved. If the blogs are limited, then the district can keep track of the content easier to ensure it contains appropriate material. I think social networking can be incredibly useful if it is used properly.

Hey Sarah,

I think it's interesting that they are having so many problems getting teachers to join the social networking sites. It would be interesting to hear feedback from the teachers as to why they aren't interested. I wonder if they want different content or if they are just unsure of how to use the technology?

Hey,
I bet one of the biggest problems in getting teachers to join social networking is a lack of tech savvy. There are so many different social networking sites to use it might seem a bit overwhelming! I bet in some instances a quick campus training would help get more teachers involved. Also, if you can't access any of these sites on campus it would be a major frustration! Too bad though! I think online resources like this are pretty cool! Maybe as younger teachers like ourselves get into education we can help out some of our technophobic colleagues!

Part of the reason these sites are being blocked is because social networking and any other form of "sharing" over the internet can be abused. I think with enough training and understanding of the end result over time could allow a more technology savy environment for future students. I would be interested to see what teachers who have been doing it for a long time think of this new advancement.

I can see how it might be difficult to get teachers to participate in social networking. Many teachers have been in the profession for years and are not willing to make changes. My Mom who has been teaching for 20 years had never heard of social networking till I started this class. She is open to the idea and very excited but I think most people are just scared of technology.

I agree - many teachers who began the profession before the onset of technology are intimidated by it and probably set in their ways. Getting into the profession in mid-life, I can relate to the intimidation factor. However, I've also learned of all the valuable resources and tools available on the net. Maybe all teachers should have to go back and take Ed422 or something similar, as part of their ongoing learning.

Social Networking is a great way for teachers to communicate with one another to share ideas. I am surprised that not many teachers are keen with this technology. Being an educator, you always are a work in progress and what better way to learn then from the experience of others? Thanks for sharing!
